Our Story

The Arizona Medical Association is the most influential physician-led non-profit in the state. Powered by our members, we lead efforts to further the practice of medicine, champion high-quality patient care, and strengthen the communities we serve.

ArMA advocates for the physician community in every aspect of their professional life and at every stage of the career — from the first day of medical school to the last day in practice.

Why Our Work Matters

Arizona physicians are practicing in the most demanding healthcare landscape in recent memory.

Administrative burdens are getting heavier. Reimbursement has stagnated. Third parties are dictating how and when patient care is delivered. And investments in the physician workforce are lagging far behind what our growing state needs.

The Arizona Medical Association exists to turn the tide. As a non-profit organization, our sole interest is in changing the healthcare landscape so that physicians can focus on patient care.

We are the only advocate unifying all Arizona physicians and physicians-in-training around a common goal: reimagining healthcare.

Our History

The Arizona Medical Association’s influence dates back to the nineteenth century. At that time, physicians lacked hospital facilities, and many lived in remote corners of the state, where they were unable to obtain timely assistance or consultations when needed.

In 1892, Joshua Miller, MD, and four colleagues sent a letter to all Arizona physicians to organize the Territorial Medical Society. A few days later, Dr. Miller was elected the first president of what would later become the Arizona Medical Association.

Over the last 133 years, ArMA has established itself as the leading advocate for Arizona physicians and physicians-in-training.
