Hobbs Highlights Milestone in Ongoing Partnership With Undue Medical Debt Gov. Katie Hobbs announced this week that more than $1 billion in medical debt has been erased for nearly 671,000 Arizonans, marking a significant milestone in the state's ongoing partnership with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt. How the Program Works The initiative, first launched in 2024, purchases qualifying medical debt from hospitals and collection agencies for a fraction of its value before eliminating the debt entirely for eligible patients. Who Qualifies According to the governor's office, recipients do not need to apply for the program. It is available to Arizona residents who: Receive low- and moderate-income Have medical debt that represents a substantial share of their annual income A Flashpoint in the 2026 Election Season Healthcare affordability has been at the forefront of Arizona's political conversation as the 2026 election season intensifies. Supporters argue that relieving burdensome medical debt can improve: Families' financial stability Creditworthiness Willingness to seek needed healthcare Critics of similar programs have generally questioned whether debt forgiveness addresses the underlying drivers of rising healthcare costs or simply treats the financial consequences after care has been delivered. As debates continue over healthcare affordability and access, Arizona's medical debt relief initiative is expected to remain a prominent example in broader discussions about how states can help patients facing significant medical expenses.

Picks Signal Which Voter Demographics Each Campaign Is Targeting Ahead of November It appears that the picks for Arizona's first lieutenant governorship have been made, giving voters a strong indication of which demographics the campaigns are targeting to win in November. Notably, a 2022 voter-approved amendment to the state constitution now requires gubernatorial candidates to have a lieutenant governor to serve at their discretion in a senior role within the administration and, should the governor vacate the office, will take the reins. Hobbs Selects Former Mesa Mayor John Giles Though many names have been floated, it has been widely reported that Gov. Hobbs has selected former Mesa Mayor John Giles. Giles had been a registered Republican since the 1980s, but recently switched to Independent and has campaigned for Kamala Harris. "I've worked to work across the partisan divide, put the politics aside, put Arizonans first, and that's my priority in my running mate," Gov. Hobbs said of her not-yet-official pick. Biggs Formally Selects Former Lawmaker Sine Kerr Rep. Andy Biggs, the Republican nominee, has formally selected former lawmaker Sine Kerr as his running mate. Kerr, who was a Buckeye dairy farmer, served in the legislature for three terms after being appointed in 2018 to fill a vacancy. In 2025, she was appointed by the Trump administration to serve as the USDA Farm Service Agency state executive director. "She's worked across the aisle to get things done at the Legislature, from spearheading the successful passage of the 2022 'water protection' bill to her sponsorship of 'Kayleigh's Law,' a landmark piece of legislation that protects victims of sex crimes from being harassed or contacted by their abuser," said Biggs of his new running mate.

Investigation Launched Into Campaign Coordination Legislator and Corporation Commission candidate Ralph Heap, MD, is facing continued scrutiny over his campaign finances after questions arose about whether his campaign improperly coordinated with an independent expenditure committee during the election. The allegations prompted the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission to open an investigation and ultimately withhold the release of Heap's public campaign funding. Request to Withdraw From Clean Elections Denied In an effort to move forward with his campaign, Heap asked to withdraw from the Clean Elections system and instead operate as a traditionally financed candidate. However, this week the Commission voted to deny that request, citing state law that requires participating candidates to certify compliance with Clean Elections requirements before public funds can be distributed. Campaign's Response Heap's campaign, meanwhile, maintains that the underlying allegations have not been resolved and that they should not be prevented from moving forward while the matter is pending.
