Consent & Confidentiality in Adolescent Health Care

Adolescent Consent & Confidentiality: The Need in Health Care

Adolescent consent and confidentiality is an area of concern in the delivery of health care to this patient population. Lack of information in this area is a barrier to optimal health care and communication with the patient and the patient's family. Studies have shown that many physicians and other clinicians who deal with these issues on a daily basis are uncertain of the management guidelines established for confidential care for adolescents.

In 1999, a committed group of clinicians, in partnership with local stakeholders, legal counsel and risk management provided by MICA, developed the first edition of the "Consent & Confidentiality in Adolescent Health Care: A Guide for Arizona Health Care Clinicians."

The "Guide" has undergone a complete revision under the direction of a committed group of physicians and clinicians invested in adolescent health. The revision offers updated language to reflect current methodologies in engaging adolescents and family members in health care decision-making. It features new, topical case scenarios and now features a toolkit with items such as office policy, staff training quiz, a powerpoint presentation, and handouts for teens and parent engagement. The Guide is launching on March 22 in conjunction with Global Teen Health Week.

ArMA is proud to partner with the Arizona Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (AzAAP) to offer the latest revision of the "Guide" for widespread use throughout Arizona. This edition is offered as a toolkit, with the following components available for download here:

ArMA gratefully acknowledges the contributions of those who worked to update the guide, including Karla Birkholz, MD, Vinny Chulani, MD, Pamela Murphy, MD, Leslie Quinn, MD, Julie Ritzman, MBA (MICA), Kristin Stookey, CRNP, and legal editors Snell & Wilmer. We are also grateful to the HonorHealth CME program for their interest in the topic and in developing an online course based on the release of this new edition.
